Ancient chestnut structures are quite diffuse in the Centre of Italy. Sometimes there is a lack of knowledge to face the need of structural rehabilitation, reinforcement or more generally of restoration. Some incorrect assessments of the actual condition of timber members or joints can lead to unnecessary interventions, e.g. the replacement of wooden elements only because of the age or to strengthening interventions heavier than the required ones. Through this guideline we are proposing a correct approach for the good practices of on site assessment of timber elements and structures made of chestnut wood.
