The in situ inspection is the instrument for a correct and complete examination of historical timber structures; typically it is carried on by means of a deep visual investigation and it can be improved by means of some instrumental tests (with non-destructive devices). The path to reach a reliable assessment of each wooden member has to take into account these main items: original grade (original defects and quality), wood alteration (due to biological attacks or abiotic agents), wood damage (too high stress, creep, broken points) and it has to include visual strength grading, regulated by apposite rule: the Italian standard UNI 11119:2004. Essential results are the definition of the real effective load carrying cross section (excepted the decayed/damaged part) and the proper grading of each timber element.
