Abstract

Katrin Weller provides this definition of ontology: "Ontologies can represent a vocabulary for a domain of interest in form of general concepts in this domain, particular instances that embody these concepts, relations which describe the properties of concepts, and axioms that capture general facts about them." An ontology is used to define significant concepts and relationships that characterize a knowledge domain. The essay analyzes the conceptual model of the Nuovo Soggettario (Subject heading) of the National Central Library of Florence (BNCF); it is born with the aim of creating a language indexing, based on the analytic-synthetic model, conforming to international standards, flexible and modular. In April 2011, the thesaurus contains about 38,000 terms; it is fed daily on the basis of proposals from the Italian National Bibliography (BNI) and the proposals submitted by the scientific and research institutions involved in the project. The essay cites the doctoral thesis of Elizabeth Vines, which analyzes the possibility to develop criteria and procedures to build the terminology of a single discipline within the context of a multidisciplinary general, and in particular Financial Economics; the thesis also attempts to analyze the technical and semantic interoperability between two different realities thesaural, the Nuovo Soggettario and thesaurus LIUC Castellanza (Varese, Italy). The essay mentions, in addition, the proposed semi-automatic indexing of doctoral theses in BNCF. In conclusion, the principles of subject are still valid that Charles A. Cutter enunciated in the Rules of 1876, and reiterated in 1966 that Emanuele Camassima in subject heading: precision, uniqueness, consistency, modernity; the voice of the subject must be direct and specific, formulated according to the actual use of language, current. Katrin Weller fornisce questa definizione di ontologia: “Ontologies can represent a vocabulary for a domain of interest in form of general concepts in this domain, particular instances that embody these concepts, relations which describe the properties of concepts, and axioms that capture general facts about them”.
