Following from interest in emotional intelligence (EI) and social-emotional learning in the United States and other countries, EI research, assessment, and intervention have grown in Italy over the past decade. In response to economic challenge and social change, educators and mental health professionals are interested in identifying and fostering individual skills that contribute to resilience and positive development. Research has documented the validity of the construct and has produced reliable measures of EI in the Italian context. EI is distinct from personality and general intelligence and is associated with indices of positive development in academic achievement, social relationships, and career decision making among youth. Interventions to enhance EI in school contexts among students and teachers are also increasing. Although further research is needed, EI development has potential as a means for promoting success in educational, work, and social contexts.
