Josefina Plá’s birth in a lighthouse on the tiny Canarian island Isla de Lobos in 1903 marked her life in two different but significant ways: like her father, who was a well-educated lighthouse keeper, she learned to love wide horizons as well as loneliness, but she also committed herself to the mission not only of exploring her own soul through poetry – which she considered but as a torch to shed light on the unconscious rather than as a mirror of reality –, but also of enlightening the Paraguayan world of art and poetry through the introduction of European avant-garde poets.
