In July 2020, the Council of the European Union decided to prolong the package of “sanctions” in force against Russia in relation to the events that unfolded in Ukraine as of 2014, namely Crimea’s annexation by Russia and the war in Eastern Ukraine. Taking accounto of the present, volatile international environment, the article re-assesses the legal basis and the logic behind the measures in question, also prospectively.
