This article analyses the graphic novels of Pablo Echaurren regarding the lives and works of avant-garde artists and groups, such as Marinetti and Futurism, Picasso and Majakovskij, that represent some of the first examples of graphic novels in Italy. It demonstrates how this particular type of comic aims to challenge the commercial strategy of representation, based on a mimetic instance, by renewing avant-garde artistic and literary techniques and it is also related to the communication strategies of the counterculture movement in Italy during the seventies.
