The premise of the proposed urban regeneration intervention for the area of the former San Salvi psychiatric hospital in Florence is in the belief that redeveloping the area of the former asylum does not only mean recovering, conserving, demolishing, building, placing new functions of use, but it means attributing to that microcosm that for centuries had represented isolation and exclusion from community life a new meaning that reflects historical-cultural and social evolution. Past and present synergistically nourish the sense of this place, opening it up to new possible meanings: the area of the former asylum, once a symbol of the constraint of individual freedom, now becomes the place of a newfound freedom and sociality
