After the separation experienced with the industrialization, Lisbon has been trying to recover the physical and symbolical bond with water through the redevelopment of the decommissioned areas along its ribeira, historically characterised by urban and maritime uses, symbolical meanings and memories The role of industrial and port structures in the construction of Lisbon’s estuarine identity is analysed through different phases, focusing on their appropriation as heritage and adaptation to new uses.
